We have to start somewhere…
Welcome to my first blog post! I’m so excited to be able to share my new creative journey with you. I hope you’re ready for some caffeine-fuelled chaotic craft projects!
For the past couple of months I’ve been on a self imposed challenge of not buying new clothes. Anything new I need or want, I am sewing myself. I’ve only made a few pieces so far – a couple of pairs of pants, a cute layered maxi skirt, and a velvet dress I wore to the ballet! I’ve been making things on a rather ad hoc basis but I want to try making a more cohesive wardrobe for Spring and Summer.
To help me do this, over the weekend I bought myself a new toy. I got an overlocker! I’ve been wanting one for a little while, it’s going to be so handy with all the fun, light summer fabrics I’ll be using. Not gonna lie, I was a little intimidated to set it up. The only time I’ve used an overlocker before was in high school home ec class, and the teacher warned us away from doing anything with the overlockers that would require them to be rethreaded, so I’ve always had this thought in my head that they were a very complex and foreign thing. Don’t get me wrong, there are a lot of steps to threading this thing, but it wasn’t actually that hard to do! Yay! Regardless, I will be keeping the instruction book nearby whenever using it. I got the Brother 2504D, it’s an entry level Brother overlocker that was on a great sale! Normally it sells for $650, but Spotlight had it on sale for $390! I also have an entry level Brother sewing machine, the GS3750WT. I feel really comfortable using Brother sewing machines, I think they’re great for beginners or people who don’t sew too much.
I also picked up some fabric to get started on my Spring/Summer wardrobe! I got a few metres of some white cotton slub with sunflowers on it. I really love natural fibres, especially in summer here, and this cotton slub fabric is great because it kind of looks like a linen fabric, but it definitely does not cost anything like a linen fabric. I’m going to make this Jenny Set I found on Etsy by ChickaFrick. I forgot to pick up some white lining fabric, so I’ll have to do that before I can make the skirt, because this cotton is way too sheer to be worn on its own. But otherwise, I have some cute wooden buttons and am ready to go with starting on the top! I just have to cut out the pattern first…
I want to make a mood board or something to properly plan out my Spring/Summer 2025 wardrobe, I like the idea of capsule wardrobes, so maybe that’s something I can try and incorporate here too… I don’t know. Maybe that can be my next post?
Till next time,
